ABSTRACT

This chapter relays how social and emotional learning (SEL) has been rediscovered in the last few decades, but is not necessarily a totally new concept and process. Social and emotional learning (SEL) is being intentionally taught with social and emotional development, behavior, and skills in order to display social and emotional competence. Social and emotional competence means displaying appropriate behavior and emotions in social settings in order to meet people's needs or goals. The National Association of Education for Young Children (NAEYC) has proposed for decades that educators, even in the elementary grades, should teach the whole child and educators have agreed, for the most part. Social and emotional learning is the teaching of appropriate social and emotional development, behavior, and skills, according to the author. Differentiation between typical development and concerning or challenging behaviors is essential.
