ABSTRACT

Bruner (1983) was one of the first to point out that language arose in the context of interactions between infant and mother (carer). Language development is an emotional process. The development from non-verbal communication to psychic language reflects the negotiations of the depressive position and, therefore, the acknowledgement of the other as a separate person. This achievement requires a more articulate communication between self and other, which lays the foundation for symbolic language to develop.
