ABSTRACT

There are core reasons, explored in this chapter, why a focus on health and wellbeing is a necessity in order for our education system to fulfill its role as the foundation of our democracy. The author explains how a holistic approach to education, in which attention is paid to developing the whole child, is beneficial to both individuals and society at large. He shows how the wellbeing of students is fundamental to their educational outcomes and success in our communities and describes the symbiotic nature of our schools with the communities in which they are located. Finally, he describes a framework for implementing a whole child approach in classrooms and schools.
