ABSTRACT

This chapter brings together educators from historically marginalized communities to explain how the system can better support teachers from outside the majority culture. Each author shares their intersectional perspectives on issues spanning teacher recruitment and retention, meeting the needs of diverse learners, cultural responsiveness, supporting children with disabilities, promoting social-emotional wellbeing, creating supportive spaces for teachers of color, teacher professional learning, and protecting transgender students and staff. Together, the authors show that an education system in which each teacher is valued for their unique background and frame of reference is instrumental to a democracy that serves society well.
