ABSTRACT

In this chapter the authors show the importance of professional learning and development and teacher leadership on student achievement and learning. They share three concrete examples of transformation professional learning and development in two different contexts and give suggestions on how the most important aspects can be adapted to other situations. In one example they show how mentorships and professional learning networks can be used as the basis for school-wide improvement. In another, the authors illustrate how teacher leadership and increased teacher collaboration can be fostered through cohorts. In the final example they explain the importance of experiential learning for teachers and describe how teacher field trips can be utilized to grow teacher capacity.
