ABSTRACT

This chapter elevates the authentic voices of a teacher and two of her high school students to illustrate the impact of privilege on the children in our schools. Each of the three authors provides their unique perspective: of a teacher who is learning to understand the lived experiences of each of her unique students, of a student of color who explains the impact of microaggression and majority culture during her time in school, and of a class valedictorian who is working to understand the advantages she was provided by her race and class. Together, the authors expose the importance for all teachers to recognize their own bias and privilege, and for all educators to institute culturally responsive practices to protect the children in their charge.
