This chapter aims to develop a methodology to quantify and evaluate the agricultural smartness through the design of a composite index, which combines the seven Smart Agriculture (SA) feature coming from the bibliometric analysis. The concept of SA has been included in the European Union growth strategy Horizon 2020, related to the goals of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. The SA features are differently available in literature: for example, up to the issues on technology and agricultural engineering are most studied, while contributions on social inclusion linked to SA are less frequent. French indicators show highest level of smart agriculture index in predominantly remote rural regions, since they have the highest values detected of smartness in all the SA characters with the exceptions of economic and technology. In Italy, predominantly urban regions are smarter than other regions for almost all SA features.
