ABSTRACT

Intention, Action, Reflection is an intervention that helps us to become conscious of the gap between our intentions and what we actually end up doing and, as importantly, to learn from it. This chapter suggests that clients think of themselves as being in a laboratory during this stage, with the action as the experiment. Reflection provides the information needed to reset the goal. The novelist again applies intention, action, and reflection to the new goal set. The exercise has three steps: we form an intention to act, we perform the intended action, and we reflect on what we have just done. It almost sounds too simple, but usually we do things in our old, habitual ways and, unsurprisingly, when we do the same things, we get the same results. The exercise is seemingly very simple but needs a little thought and effort to be truly effective. The key is in setting the goal, the intention.
