ABSTRACT
This chapter aims to help creatives get unstuck and keep moving forward with a project or a practice. Creative people like to solve problems. In practice, whether advising a student or coaching a performer, the chapter begins by asking the art-maker what he or she is working on. The experiment might turn into a “complete disaster,” but they can always return to their previous ways of working. An actor goes home to practice not solving the problem. The problem is serious trouble memorizing lines. “That’s pretty easy not to solve,” the actor thinks ironically. The actor sits down with the script and looks at all the notes and underlined words and realizes memorizing isn’t the problem. Flashes of insight about the character appear and, after a few days, the actor realizes that the lines have been memorized.
