ABSTRACT

To help creative people make peace with their inner critic and discover a sense of creative freedom. Most creative people struggle at times with a harsh inner critic. A mindfulness approach, however, recognizes that fighting against the inner critic often results in increasing its intensity, and thus, mindfulness takes the approach of making peace with it. Coaches can make peace with their inner critic by observing it from the perspective of an objective witness with an attitude of non-judgment and then practicing taking steps to activate an attitude of kindness and self-compassion. One way to cultivate a state of calm is through writing meditation. This can be adapted to a number of specific situations or intentions, including making peace with the inner critic. Writing meditation for making peace with coaches inner critic can be used in session by guiding their client through each step of the writing meditation practice. Coaches can offer the prompts verbally or in writing.
