ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to transform negative self-talk and over-rumination into creative focus and awareness, enabling greater unimpeded access to the flow state. Ideally, the session introducing this exercise would involve meeting in a park or taking a walk outside, as being fully physical present with the outside world is foundational to the haiku. A handout with a description of the haiku as meditation in action, strong examples of haiku, and writing instructions should be prepared ahead of time and given to the client for home use. The client finds an inspiring place to sit and take in the world, with notebook and pen handy. The coach can have the client close their eyes and do deep breathing before looking out at the world and pointing to sensory inspiration in the immediate environment: a bee collecting pollen, a leaf falling, an icicle dripping.
