ABSTRACT

The idea is that when negative self-talk pops into coaches consciousness, they naturally visualize their new vibrant, confident statement replacing it. This will boost their positive feelings and help they decide on the best course of action. When Annie felt the old frustrations creeping in, she consciously checked in with her self-talk and looked at her card and her symbol to remind her to flip to the new confident language. Eventually, it became a new habit to check in with her mind chatter and ensure that her internal dialogue was supporting her in her progress. The outcome for Annie was that she compared herself less to others and became more focused on her creative path. Left unchecked, unhelpful self-talk can bring creative self-doubt, self-criticism, performance anxiety, and procrastination. This step-by-step guide uses a simple process to raise awareness of the impact of unhelpful self-talk on artistic practice.
