ABSTRACT

SUMMARY. The processing of orders for materials that are not currently available because they are either out of print or not yet published is problematic. A large number of books are going out of print in short periods of time. Too many orders are returned to libraries after a vendor discovers the title is indefinitely out of stock or out of print. Publishers announce books well in advance of the expected publication date whetting the appetite of library patrons and frustrating the acquisitions department that tries to purchase the items. In manual operations these requests must be reshuffled, and reprocessed until the item is either in the library or the request falls into that certain limbo that awaits any order that gets shuffled one too many times. This paper will describe how the INNOVACQ acquisitions system can be used to process order requests for out of print and not yet published materials in an effective and expeditious manner.
