Over a decade has passed since online searching was introduced to library public services. Currently, developments such as electronic publishing, local area networks, full-text online, and the new information technologies have far-reaching implications for online searching and assure its continued evolution. Few aspects of the online industry have sparked as much controversy and have engaged as varied a cross-section of spokespersons as the trend toward end user searching. In the past, professionals such as lawyers have been trained to search online databases; however, the market now includes an inordinate number of products aimed at health sciences personnel. In fact, database producers and vendors have developed sophisticated programs aimed directly at the end user; librarians are being asked by users to recommend search services and to provide courses on how to use these systems.
