ABSTRACT

An end user search service was established by the Health Sciences Library to complement the Library’s mediated search service. Initially, Library staff believed that choosing a menu-driven system such as BRS/AFTER DARK would mean that only a minimal amount of librarian assistance would be required. Unfortunately, users’ problems resulted from a lack of conceptual understanding of the search process, rather than from problems with search mechanics. Although the best way to train occasional users on a search system is still subject to debate, individualized pre-search assistance from the librarian has proven effective.
