ABSTRACT

Following a discussion of some basic problems associated with the cataloging of newspapers, this article discusses the main protocols used by the U.S. Newspaper Project in dealing with title variations. A general discussion of the concept of uniform titles as they are currently applied to newspapers is then presented, and this is followed by a proposal to revert to the “traditional” concept of uniform titles. It is argued that this change would be beneficial to both the creators and the users of newspaper bibliographies. A possible format is suggested.
