ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the planning process and day of the event, followed by a discussion of learnings that emerged from implementing “Hack It! Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Divine Tools” at the University of North Carolina system's designated public liberal arts college. Planning the art hack is relevant to their professional pursuits as it allows them to practice skills in production, organization, and collaboration. Hack events, which rely on collaboration and interdisciplinarity, have moved from the commercial tech sector into the arts and other fields, including Digital Humanities. The Advanced Interactive Media students, who had taken the Ancient World course in years past, brainstormed topics for the hack event that would serve as prompts for project ideation. Teams work through phases of ideation, prototyping, and execution. The judging and awards ceremony were successful in "DIY Divine Tools" as they were kept light and lively.
