ABSTRACT

More specific details about the history of each sculpture can be easily found online, but for the chapter, the author focuses on the meaning and the interplay of power that result when two works of art are juxtaposed to form a sculptural mashup. The language that reporters and bloggers use to talk about the way they interact could easily be applied to a musical mashup, as well. Charging Bull has stood on its own in Manhattan's Financial District since 1989. Music theorists begin by studying formal and structural features of music; however, form emerges from experimental practice, and it becomes more than pure syntax only when it is embedded semantically. Mashups, in addition to being analyzed as art, can also be seen as part of the system of commodity exchange that is the music industry. Unfortunately, copyright law binds musical creators into an impossible space.
