ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a number of case studies integrating interviews with some of the artists and producers working at the forefront of this field. It is built on the practices and artistic trajectories of live scoring of silent films whilst blending the two key experimental artistic trajectories of "expanded cinema" and "video jockeying" which preceded it. Rather, the chapter focuses on existing narrative films and their sonic re-imagining through rescoring and live scoring. There are a number of practices within the cinematic remix spectrum, the authors have defined the four main genres that are live scoring, live rescoring, live remixed scoring, and live responsive scoring. Although live scoring involves little in the way of remix techniques, it qualifies as the foundational genre of cinematic remix since it establishes the staging and performative conventions of the three genres which follow. Furthermore, live vertical remixes represent an evolution of language and techniques of live cinema remix, an area hitherto under-considered within remix studies.
