ABSTRACT

Remix practice for the author has been inextricably linked to collecting and archiving images, audio, and video. As the author was getting started with video remix in the 1970s, his work in television/video industry, specifically postproduction, gave them access to high-end video technology decades before it became available to the ''prosumer'' market. In this chapter, the expression "critical mass'' appears regularly as applied to this personal media collection of ''muse files." There would often come a turning point where growing collection had become rich and large enough to support a new creative effort. In the summer of 1980, the author made a video remix to enhance one of the author concert performance videos featuring this English post-punk band shot a few months earlier. As a postscript on the footage library, in 2007 the author started to post clips from his collection to YouTube. There are few parallels between Cold War Shortwave and the next remix work entitled 80s Time Capsule.
