ABSTRACT

This chapter explores affect dissonance methodologies in feminist pedagogical experiments of remixing realities for immersive experiences. Feminist remix as affect dissonance methodology includes the vantage points of those who have been excluded from knowledge production, reveals and critiques hierarchical power structures, recognizes differences in sociocultural material conditions of lived experience, exposes the unmarked, and critiques prevalent cultural narratives that establish social norms. The chapter demonstrates how the author have been using affective dissonance methodology as pedagogy and as a critical approach to analyze remixes of collage, video, data, and popular culture as the digitized materials are juxtaposed, overlaid, and edited into 360-degree immersive experiences. Our immersive experience project, called Overlap: Full Circle, brought student groups from nine university courses, public school teachers, and librarians to the gallery and utilized a 360-degree camera to film, with their signed permission, their reactions, and conversations instigated by the pedagogical encounters with the art.
