ABSTRACT

The transition between managerial or specialist roles into senior leadership within organizations can be profoundly unsettling and is a central theme for many leadership coaching assignments. It is a transition that may be both organizational and personal, reflecting the ambiguity of both broader, more strategic leadership roles, and the turbulence of a changing sense of Self, occasioned by the experience of midlife. In this chapter we will explore the concept of individuation, as a lifelong development journey, and consider the importance of the midlife experience, and the implications for coaches who are working in this transitional space.
