ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book addresses two primary audiences: Library and Information Science (LIS) educators and LIS practitioners. It describes the survey study of culturally and linguistically diverse LIS students conducted by Caidi and Dali in 2015 that also gave impetus and direction to our Diversity by Design thinking. The book focuses on the fundamental idea of inclusion in application to the LIS classroom. It argues that diversity in LIS education is unevenly acknowledged around the world, and it is imperative that we understand the importance of prioritizing diversity in LIS education globally. The book explains the significance and implications of diversity prioritization to examining the challenges and roles of higher education, professional associations, and the professional community in this endeavor. It considers leadership that prioritizes diversity and collaboration to achieve change and is marked by the ethic of caring and applied knowledge. .
