ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces two sets of tools for designing a more inclusive classroom: Learning about students’ names and managing teamwork. How we identify ourselves and how we interact with others are two basic, yet significant aspects of our everyday lives. Designing an inclusive learning experience around these social elements prepares students for many types of future interactions—in part by building a diversity mindset. This chapter broadens awareness of the kinds of inequities that may occur in classrooms and provides strategies to increase inclusion by positioning diversity as everybody’s business. The first set of tools are name-focused activities that work to respectfully initiate conversations about preferred personal name use as well as academic and professional titles. The second set of pedagogical tools aim to develop greater equity between teammates during team-based projects. These strategies have been implemented in writing-focused courses taught in English at McGill University, in the Canadian province of Quebec.
