ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on what leaders need to know and be able to do in order to create schools that meet the needs of students with disabilities. It begins with the current context of disability in schools. The chapter summarizes the research literature relating disability to the needs of school leaders, and finally detail what inclusive leadership around disability looks like with tools and case studies. The chapter reviews and synthesizes five key aspects of the research literature that inclusive leaders need to understand: intersections and overrepresentation, social construction of disability, efficacy of inclusive services, response to intervention, and presuming competence. The chapter highlights two schools, located in Central New York, that have created more inclusive services for their students with disabilities.
