ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how school leaders committed to fostering educational equity and navigates this terrain as boundary spanners, border crossers, and advocates. Several key strands of literature are important for school leaders to understand when considering how to foster inclusivity on these social frontiers through crossing borders and boundaries and through advocacy. These three strands of literature-culturally responsive leadership, parent engagement, and community engagement-intersect to create a foundation for inclusive leadership on social frontiers. The chapter aims to apply these bodies of literature by describing specific examples of inclusive leadership on social frontiers. It emphasizes that school leaders navigate these social frontiers by being boundary spanners, border crossers, and advocates, applying these roles to the practices of tripping equity traps, fostering relational networks, and building partnerships.
