ABSTRACT

The aesthetics of a sonification can determine its success as the designer considers auditory perception, data and musical structures to create an effective auditory display. The Data-Mappings-Language-Meaning framework offers a structure that focuses on the aesthetic decisions in every step of the sonification process, from the dataset to the listener. This chapter also proposes evaluation criteria to assess the success of a sonification from an aesthetic point of view. The use of design and evaluation methods based on the same approach give the researcher a toolkit to create and examine sonifications that avoid common design pitfalls. This mixed method approach combines empirical findings from the field of sonification research and offers ideas to drive its research forward.
