ABSTRACT

The chapter aims at investigating gender equity in an English language textbook at primary level of education in Bangladesh. Research studies so far done in this area show gender discrimination in textbooks. Existing research works are holistic in approach and indicate the necessity of more in-depth study. Hence, the current study explores whether gender discrimination is portrayed through the language, images, and illustrations. It uses mixed-method approach. The analysis of data reveals linguistic sexism, male domination, and subjugation of women. Segregation of gender is found where men enjoy greater diversity in occupational roles. Only in a few cases women are highlighted, but more examples could have been shown to motivate young learners. Findings also demonstrate patriarchal social values in the textbook. Such biased representation of gender exposes the unfair and oppressive state of social and economic relationship to the school children. Hence, the study suggests the necessity of raising awareness among the textbook writers to depict social prominence and potentials of women. At the end, the chapter suggests to adapt gender equitable materials to eliminate the unfair account of gender.
