ABSTRACT

Through an exploration of the foundation values in the Professional Standards and how these underpin effective professional relationships, we will draw on the experiences of novice and expert mentors (supporters) to elicit the key knowledge, skills and dispositions that are required to effectively support student teachers through the transition phase to become fully registered teachers in Scotland. Within this, we will discuss the crucial role played by supporters (mentors) as a cornerstone of successful transition to full registration, which involves a major step up in teaching commitment and responsibility for the probationer teacher.
