ABSTRACT

Drawing on 40 in-depth interviews with sexually nonconforming Latinas, sociologist Katie Acosta shows how these women negotiate family and achieve empowerment through both visibility and invisibility as some disclosed their sexual nonconformity to their families and others chose to inhabit an “in-between space” that gave them the flexibility to pursue or not pursue visibility as they desired.
