Law professor Martha Minow reflects on her experience working on a 1991 legal case on behalf of a woman who requested visitations with the child she and her former spouse—the child’s birth mother—co-parented before their break up. In discussing how the Court refused to see her client as a parent, she considers the importance and limitations of defining families formally or functionally.
