ABSTRACT

Correctional facilities are tasked with maintaining the order and safety of inmates while also requiring them to follow institutional rules and procedures to maintain that safety and security. Effective management of inmates can be approached in multiple ways depending upon the preference and experience of the administration. In this chapter, different models of inmate management are discussed along with universal standards on treatment of prisoners and common institutional policies and practices. In addition, typical sanctions for rule violations are explored. Finally, there are a number of special concerns surrounding prison rules and regulations that directly affect inmates, such as solitary confinement and mental illness, which will be addressed in this chapter.
