ABSTRACT

Working as a correctional office is a unique occupation. Correctional officers are responsible for the care, custody, and control of the inmate population. The major goals of correctional officers are protecting the community by ensuring inmates remain incarcerated, to ensure the smooth and effective operation of the facility, to ensure a humane environment, and to assist inmates in developing a positive and productive lifestyle so they will successfully return to the community as law-abiding members. Officers face many challenges, including maintaining order, ensuring compliance by inmates, dealing with work strains and dangers, effectively dealing with job stress, and creating a better, healthier, and more positive work environment. While there are many challenges faced by the job, there are many positive aspects to being a correctional officer, including protecting the community and assisting inmates.
