ABSTRACT
In this essay, Susan J. Wolfson approaches Pride and Prejudice and undertakes a careful, close reading of the novel. She uses a hybrid method: reading the literary manifestations of the material data-field, and reading material manifestations for literary, not just circumstantial, significance. Nobody escapes the contours, including the narrator, whose opening lob, for all its crafty wit, arcs into sober material conclusions.
