ABSTRACT

In this essay Laaleen Sukhera features insights gleaned from many of the writers originally involved in the Austenistan project, key Jane Austen Society of Pakistan (JASP) members in Pakistan and around the world, and various people from ‘the Janeite universe’. Her journalistic approach enables her to feature their individual voices, creating a conversation around a wide array of topics, among them agency, empire, gender ideology, power dynamics, social norms, cultural narratives of independence, patriarchy, and technocracy—all dimensions of how Jane Austen is read and interpreted in a global context.
