ABSTRACT

This chapter explores what shapes women’s experience of childbirth in the perinatal period and looks at shared decision-making as a way to promote woman-centred care. The process of shared decision-making in midwifery care is valuable in promoting optimal health outcomes for a woman and her baby. Women have described childbirth as an intense powerful life experience that affects their life and being. The experience of childbirth is influenced by a number of factors, including women’s health, social environment and cultural background, the course of her pregnancy and birth, and the care offered by professionals. Given the importance of the experience and the value of sense of control, midwives need to consider how they can play a positive role in inviting each woman to be actively involved in her care and participate in decision-making. Shared decision-making as a process offers opportunities to enter into discussions that maintain the integrity of all of the individuals involved.
