ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a class project that provides an example of the tenets of translanguaging. The case study took place at the English language center of an urban university in the Northeast region of the United States. The setting for the case study is an intensive English class, called Spring Boost Intensive English, which meets for three hours per day over four weeks in the spring semester. In the past, students have come to the center with a reluctance to speak freely and to let go of the boundaries of their identity. The case study features a role-play activity designed to incorporate translanguaging to help university-level English as Second Language students develop interactive presentation skills. One of the most crucial aspects of establishing a translingual space is instructor and student buy-in of the idea. It is important to help students to understand how translingual practice and activities that facilitate it can enhance and support language learning.
