ABSTRACT

This chapter exemplifies how creating a multimodal educational rap video that showcases academic contents can be an engaging way to implement multiliteracies pedagogy in an English as a Foreign Language classroom. More specifically, the authors demonstrate how the pedagogical application of this project involves Learning by Design and Team Learning. The chapter describes The educational rap video Nurture or Nature was produced from late June, 2012, and finally published in January, 2013, on the campus of Kyoto University in Japan. The purpose of the academic rap video project was to offer an opportunity for the learners to share their understandings of an academic topic to a broad audience online in through video production. The chapter demonstrates multiliteracy pedagogical innovation in several ways. It is a multimodal academic rap video. The academic rap video was inherently multimodal because students were challenged to integrate linguistic, visual, auditory, and gestural modes.
