ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how the devices contributed to increasing student awareness of the various uses of mobile applications in developing their English language skills. It provides a case studs which describes a ninth-grade classroom – equivalent to the last grade in middle school in the Brazilian educational system – in Sergipe, Brazil’s smallest state, located in the Northeast region of the country. The chapter focuses on a series of ninth-grade English as a Foreign Language lessons at Northeast State School (NSS). NSS is a 65-year-old educational institution located in the city of Sunrise and most students live in small towns near the school. The English language learners in this case study were in the last grade of middle school in the Brazilian public education system, and all of them spoke Brazilian Portuguese as their native language. Mobile apps offer opportunities to explore vocabulary and language features as well as practice the skills of listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
