ABSTRACT

This chapter explores advocacy as related to English language teaching (ELT) and teachers around the globe. Broadly distinguishing between advocacy in English as a second language (ESL) contexts and English as a foreign language (EFL) contexts, the chapter outlines the various goals of advocacy in relation to ELT. One example of such a goal is the dual goal of improving educational access and quality for English learners and promoting policy changes which improve working conditions for English language teachers. Types of advocacy actions and the skills needed to advocate are also presented. With the stance that advocacy is empowerment, as multilingual students become engaged global citizens and their teachers support linguistic and cultural diversity in all students, this chapter itself is a call for advocacy to widen the circle of knowledge about advocacy in all ELT contexts.
