ABSTRACT

This chapter explores advocacy as related to English language teaching (ELT) and teachers around the globe. It outlines the various goals of advocacy in relation to ELT. One example of such a goal is the dual goal of improving educational access and quality for English learners and promoting policy changes which improve working conditions for English language teachers. Schools and classrooms are social spaces, and the ability to collaborate provides the foundation for all instructional advocacy. Establishing strong collegial relationships starts at the beginning of the school year and includes getting to know colleagues in the school, identifying co-advocates, and drawing upon professional knowledge and expertise to discuss English language rights and best practices. Teachers can use a typical language learning activity, role-playing, to develop advocacy skills. Teachers can also lay the foundation for advocacy by seeking out relationships with everyone in their school, university, or language center.
