ABSTRACT

The position of researchers in one discipline is a difficult one to maintain within a debate internal to another discipline, especially when questions of methodology are at issue and sister disciplines, such as history and anthropology, are involved. For my part, the best way to handle it is doubtless to take my own discipline as a starting point and to analyse from that basis the points of convergence, of divergence, and of over-lap with other disciplines. I think, moreover, that if one wants to avoid being trapped within an endless theoretical debate over the relation between anthropology and history, discussions must of necessity proceed on the basis of concrete research.
