ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an overview of the landscape of MOOCs and OER in the Global South, while highlighting the prevailing challenges and various cases of success in many different countries. It summarizes the content in the 28 chapters of this book, identifies the regions and countries discussed in each chapter, and further specifies the main topics and foci by chapter. Also featured in this chapter are selected national initiatives, international projects, systematic literature reviews, and empirical studies, as well as the various design and development frameworks for MOOCs and open education. The chapter showcases some of the most impactful projects, policies, and practices in the Global South. Perhaps most importantly, this chapter raises striking questions for readers from across the world and discusses in detail on how the Global South leverages MOOCs and open education for sustainable development and transformative education.
