ABSTRACT
Rivers are important landscape elements functioning as habitats, conduits, filters, and sources of biological and physical materials. Rivers integrate human and environmental activities and processes across the land and freshwater interface, providing valuable measures of overall landscape condition. Through this integration, rivers function as social-ecological systems as well as representing dynamic landscapes in themselves. This chapter examines rivers within and as their own landscapes through the perspective of riverscapes.
