ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that a critical discussion in a beginner-level class is possible and that gendered themes which surface in Francois Ozon’s 8 Women render it a wonderful text to facilitate analytical discourse even at a beginner level. Paired with Simone de Beauvoir’s “Monologue,” it can be a perfect introductory text for students new to discussing this topic in a second language. The eponymous heroine of Claire d’Albe presents a clear case for why unrealistic expectations women encounters, expectations which allow for no self-fulfillment, bring forth disastrous consequences. Particularly in the case of colors, instructors across the board develop imaginative games or have students describe the colors of what they are wearing. Admittedly, beginner students’ advanced peers often serve as more effective recruiters than faculty. Advanced coursework is where students explore loftier topics and employ their critical thinking skills while using the language.
