ABSTRACT

In the age of technology, when even our medical records are digitized, art therapy can also find its place. When someone thinks of the application of art therapy, they usually think of materials such as paint, clay, pencils, pastels, canvases, and potter wheels. Specifically within medical environments, such as a chemotherapy treatment room or on a pediatric hematology unit, the use of iPad/tablet has allowed for barriers to be broken and art therapy to have its impact. The standard procedure at the cancer treatment center is to bring the patient into the treatment room, a series of individual cubicles, and assign an oncology nurse who discusses and administers the chemotherapy treatment. Charles Maier’ treatment had just started when the art therapist arrived to his cubical to introduce herself and offer art therapy through technology. Charles explained how the egg is a representation of his own body, it is fragile and is fighting off the cancerous tumor in his colon.
