ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of process-oriented guided inquiry learning (POGIL), situates it within a spectrum of inquiry-based science pedagogies and offers a sequence of tasks for mentoring beginning science teachers in using the POGIL approach. POGIL is an inquiry-based, experiential learning approach that enables small groups of pupils to solve carefully designed activities that adhere to a well-formulated cycle of learning. Inquiry-based approaches, including the POGIL approach, address the drawbacks of traditional teaching by discouraging passivity. An important aspect mentors need to focus on with a beginning teacher is group work. During POGIL activities, teachers are encouraged to allow pupils to work in groups of three or four, and each member has a role with specific responsibilities. With each lesson, POGIL aims to integrate seven process skills. The seven process skills are: oral and written communication, teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, management, information processing, and assessment.
