ABSTRACT
In this introductory chapter, the editors provide a rationale for the importance of developing customized approaches to engaging college students. The chapter specifically discusses shifting the onus for engagement from students to educators, moving beyond the “magical thinking” philosophy, and using theories to guide one’s practices. In addition, the chapter clarifies the key themes that undergird each of the chapters in the book, as well as introducing the new populations for the third edition.
