ABSTRACT

This chapter is based on the well-founded belief that in order to create engagement opportunities that serve students in equitable ways, knowledge from communities of color must be considered and incorporated into the design and delivery of engagement programs and practices. The authors highlight some key concepts that center environment, culture, and identity in the discussion about engagement before discussing how college educators can reenvision and redesign engagement opportunities to be more racially equitable. In the final section, the authors offer a set of recommendations for policy and practice, which serves as a starting point for educators wanting to adopt a serious commitment to serving Students of Color.
