ABSTRACT

Understanding that much of the foundational and contemporary scholarship and practice around student engagement in higher education is covertly rooted in and focused on the experiences of White students, attempts to reframe this engagement through a critical Whiteness lens require that scholars and practitioners alike challenge themselves and the students with whom they work to decenter Whiteness and White supremacy in higher education. This chapter provides educators with a broad overview of the evolution of critical Whiteness scholarship in higher education and student affairs, and then presents readers with examples of how to critically engage White students across a range of functional areas and engagement opportunities. The practice of engaging students within institutions of higher education is always mediated through a larger social structure that creates spaces and experiences that privilege and are designed for White students. This chapter provides a collection of tools and resources to challenge White students and educators to intentionally question and resist these dynamics through a student engagement lens.
